How does chin augmentation work?

Chin augmentation is performed using a silicone implant to add natural-looking volume to a “weak” or small chin, bringing greater harmony to the facial proportions. A weak chin can contribute to the appearance of a double chin, the lack of a sharp neck angle, or how the other facial features appear. The shape and size of the silicone implant are customized to provide a more balanced, ideal appearance.

Preparing for your chin augmentation surgery

Strictly follow your surgeon’s instructions regarding medication and lifestyle modifications to achieve the best chin augmentation results. Chin augmentation patients must prepare for surgery by getting enough rest. Refrain from smoking four to six weeks before and after the surgery to prevent complications or slower healing.

Nicotine interferes with the oxygen supply in the bloodstream, which can affect the appearance and recovery of the chin after surgery.

You will need to arrange for transportation home from the procedure. You will have restricted movement and will not be able to perform strenuous activities for a week or two following your surgery. Because of this, it is advised that you arrange for one week off work.

What is the procedure?

Chin augmentation takes approximately one hour and is performed under either local or general anesthesia. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and you will be able to go home the same day. You will need to arrange a ride home before you undergo your procedure.

A small incision is created in a natural fold under the chin, and a surgical “pocket” is created for the implant. Making the incision along the natural fold helps to conceal any incision line.

An appropriately sized silicone implant is then fit into the pocket, carefully adjusted into position, and sutured into place. The incision is carefully closed, and a sterile dressing is applied.

Combining facial procedures

Chin augmentation can be performed under local anesthesia in most cases. A chin augmentation is often combined with other facial enhancement procedures to provide even more attractive results. It may be coupled with neck liposuction, a facelift, or nose surgery to significantly enhance facial balance. Small, conservative implants are used in women to subtly improve the profile and three-quarter views, while larger, more masculine implants are usually used in men, strengthening the jawline.

What can I expect in the results?

Chin augmentation improves the projection of the chin and can reduce the appearance of a double chin or a large nose by balancing the nose shape with a more defined chin. It also can enhance a patient’s appearance and confidence, improving the sharp under-chin angle associated with youth and an attractive profile.

The results of the surgery are visible immediately upon removal of the dressings, although some of the new look is hidden due to the temporary swelling. The results will continue to improve as swelling subsides over the next one to four weeks. Scars fade over time, with significant long-term results settling after four to six weeks.

What is the recovery time?

After surgery, a light compression dressing is worn on the chin for a few days. Sutures are then removed five days after the procedure. Post-operative swelling varies depending on the natural healing rate of the patient and can range from one to four weeks. Most patients will be able to return to work and continue their normal activities in about one week. All strenuous activity, including all cardio exercise, is restricted for two weeks to allow the area to heal completely.

Blood thinners such as aspirin, NSAIDS (ibuprofen, Advil, Aleve, Motrin, etc), fish oil, vitamin E, and others must be avoided for at least two weeks after surgery. We will provide you with specific instructions for your recovery. Following these instructions will help speed your recovery and reduce the risk of postoperative complications.

Are there any risks?

Though rare, as with any surgery, post-operative complications are possible, including infection, bleeding, blood clots, and poor healing (including scarring), which could require treatment or surgery.

Risks specific to chin augmentation also include asymmetry, numbness or paresthesia (tingling or pins-and-needles feeling), and infection requiring implant removal.
